If lamps are key accessories in a room (which I believe they are), then their shades should be the crowning jewel. You can easily find an inexpensive lamp and top it with a proper fitting, interesting shade and end up with a more elegant design statement. Or, turn a pair of vases or urns into a pair of lamps, as in the photo above, and add the right topper for a more unique and creative look.
Below are a few key tips for lampshade shopping when you’re in the market:
- Always take your lamp with you! It’s impossible to determine the correct size and proportion without the lamp present.
- Allow the shade to follow the style of the room…a contemporary room can handle a large drum shade while a more traditional setting requires a classic bell-shaped shade.
- Make sure that the harp and finial, which secure the shade, fit properly. It’s frustrating to have a shade always tilted and loose.
- Find a local lamp and shade shop. Their owner should be very knowledgeable in helping you fit your lamp with the proper shade. They may even suggest a wooden base to give your lamp a boost. Lucky for us, we have Tonya and her daughter at Renee’s Fabrics and Accessories in Aberdeen! She has a great selection of shades and finials and can turn anything into a lamp!
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, texture and embellishment when choosing a lamp shade! It’s a neat way to add a finishing detail.
